The former Next Level Communications building is discovering its wild side.

Santa Rosa outdoor sports apparel company Marmot Mountain has signed a 10-year lease for 43,000 square feet of the 139,000 square foot building on State Farm Drive in Rohnert Park. The company plans to move its 124 employees from Santa Rosa and hire 40 more in the next three years.

The expansion is warranted because of increased sales and a need to expand the space to include a photography studio, larger production facility and storage space.

The company will also lease 15,000 square feet from an adjacent building.

The Next Level Communications building was built in the late 1990s, but after the company was purchased and later disbanded by Motorola, its manicured gardens and Feng Shui interior remained empty. Parts of the space were occupied for various times, but this is the largest single tenant the four-acre campus has seen since Next Level.

According to reports, 95 percent of sales come from items made overseas and in Central America, but the company's top-tier products are manufactured in the United States. Marmot also has offices in Nevada, Canada and Europe.
