Girls on the Run Sonoma County will host their 5K Family Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, May 12, at 9 a.m. at the Rohnert Park Community Center.

More than 300 girls from the third through eighth grades will participate, and County Supervisor Efren Carrillo will lead warm-ups. Also, Supervisor Shirlee Zane and RP Mayor Jake Mackenzie will be on hand to meet and greet.

Girls on the Run is a nonprofit prevention program for girls in the third through eighth grade. Girls on the Run Sonoma County offers after school programs for 22 Sonoma County schools.

With a mission to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living, the 24-lesson after school curriculum combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with health-based lessons that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem solving skills and make healthy decisions.

All of this is accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and the community. Girls on the Run Sonoma County is an Independent Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of more than 170 locations across the United States and Canada.
